What is Teeth Cleaning & Polishing?
Professional teeth cleaning (also called scaling and polishing) is a preventive dental procedure performed by a dentist to remove plaque, tartar (calculus), and surface stains that regular brushing and flossing cannot eliminate.
Regular cleaning every 6 months is the single most effective way to prevent gum disease, cavities, and other serious dental problems. It also leaves your teeth feeling noticeably cleaner and looking brighter.
Benefits of Teeth Cleaning & Polishing
- ✅ Removes plaque and tartar buildup completely
- ✅ Prevents gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis)
- ✅ Reduces risk of cavities
- ✅ Fresher breath
- ✅ Removes surface stains for a brighter appearance
- ✅ Early detection of dental issues during the exam
- ✅ Comfortable and quick — usually under 45 minutes
The Treatment Process
Oral Examination
Before cleaning, Dr. Aparna examines your teeth and gums for cavities, gum disease, and other issues.
Ultrasonic Scaling
An ultrasonic scaler is used to break up and remove hardened tartar deposits on teeth surfaces and below the gumline.
Hand Scaling
Fine hand instruments are used to remove any remaining tartar and clean between teeth and along the gumline.
Polishing
A gritty polishing paste is applied using a soft rotating brush to remove surface stains and give teeth a clean, smooth finish.
Fluoride Treatment (Optional)
A fluoride varnish may be applied to strengthen enamel and provide protection against cavities — especially for children and high-risk patients.
